RM 2.4 Wireless Pairing

Using wireless devices in an industrial setting can often be problematic due to the presence of RF noise. MobileCollect’s RM2.4 protocol was designed from the ground up for use in industrial environments where high amounts of RF noise would lead to communication failures for other wireless protocols such as Bluetooth. To utilize RM2.4 wireless to send data from a Mobile Module Transmitter to a Base Receiver, a one-time Pairing operation is required before operation. Due to the nature of the RM2.4 protocol, the pairing function only needs to be done once. There are 3 ways to pair a Mobile Module to a Base Receiver.

  1. Pairing-on-the-fly
  2. Pairing with Xpress Setup
  3. Pairing with Extended Setup

This feature guide will walk you through pairing your Mobile Module with the Xpress Setup Program.

Putting a Mobile Module Transmitter into Setup Mode

Configuring Mobile Module Transmitters requires putting them in setup mode. To place a Mobile Module in setup mode, follow the sequence of button presses below. Once in Setup mode, initiate a pairing request by pressing the Setup button once.

Setup Mode

  1. Hold gray Setup button
  2. Press orange Read button once
  3. Release gray Setup button

Red and Green LEDs will Blink 5x then flash rapidly = Setup Mode (~15-60 sec)

Pairing/Action Request

  1. Press gray Setup Button once when in Setup Mode (Double Green LED 1 sec)

Pairing to the Global Channel in Xpress Setup

If your SPC software doesn’t require channel identification to track which gage produced a reading, you can use the Global Channel to simplify setup. With the Global Channel, all incoming measurements are treated the same way and sent to the host using one consistent output format, rather than managing separate channel mappings for each device.

  1. Open MobileCollect Xpress Setup and Find the Base.
  2. Click the “Pair” button in the “Global measurement channel setup:” section.
  3. A status message indicating that the Base is in pairing mode will appear and the status bar will be illuminated yellow.
  4. Put the Mobile Module in Setup Mode and request a pairing by following the steps in section Setup Mode.
  5. When successful, the status bar will be illuminated green with the information of the Mobile Module Transmitter that was paired.

Pairing to Individual Channels in Xpress Setup

If your SPC software supports gage and measurement traceability by channel identifiers, you can pair each Mini Mobile Transmitter to its own dedicated channel. This ensures every reading arrives with a consistent channel identifier, allowing the software to automatically associate data with the correct gage, part feature, or inspection step. Pairing transmitters to individual channels reduces operator selection errors and makes it easier to audit which device produced each measurement.

  1. Open MobileCollect Xpress Setup and Find the Base.
  2. Click the “Pair” button for the desired channel in the “Individual measurement channels setup:” section.
  3. The selected channel to pair to will be illuminated in yellow.
  4. Put the Mobile Module in setup mode and request a pairing by following the steps in the Setup Mode section.
  5. When successful, the channel row illuminates green with the information of the Mobile Module that was paired.

Conclusion

Pairing Mobile Module Transmitters to Base Receivers is a fundamental step in deploying a reliable MobileCollect system in any facility. With Xpress Setup, you have two simple options: pair on the Global Channel for straightforward collection when channel identification isn’t needed, or pair to individual channels for gage traceability and automated tracking in SPC software.
