RS-232 Serial Protocol - Traditionally a Wired Connection

RS-232 is a long-established reliable serial communication standard that sends data one bit at a time over a direct connection between two devices (typically a DTE and DCE). To communicate reliably, both sides must use the same COM settings—most importantly baud rate (speed), along with data bits, parity, and stop bits. In traditional RS-232 systems, the link is wired using common connectors such as a DB9 or instrument-specific cables, which makes it dependable but can limit mobility and create cable-management challenges on the shop floor.

RS-232 serial communication is here to stay because it’s proven, simple, and extremely reliable in real-world industrial environments. Its point-to-point, low-overhead design is robust against many of the compatibility and network issues that can affect more complex interfaces, and it continues to be widely supported across instruments, controllers, and software. For many data collection and automation tasks, RS-232 remains a dependable “just works” standard that delivers consistent results year after year.

RS-232 Mobile Module - Wireless RS-232 Serial Transmitter

The MobileCollect RS-232 V2 Mobile Module is a purpose-built wireless transmitter that enables true wireless RS-232 communication with native serial devices—without replacing proven equipment. Many RS-232 instruments output data through a DB9 connector, and RS-232 signal levels can range up to approximately ±15 V; the RS-232 Mobile Module is designed with onboard circuitry to safely handle these higher voltage levels. In addition to DB9, MicroRidge offers multiple cable and connector options to support other common RS-232 connection styles used by gages and industrial devices.

Designed for flexible RS-232 data collection, the RS-232 Mobile Module can be configured to work with a wide range of serial-output gages, scales, DROs, and other devices. Using the MobileCollect setup programs, you can set the required serial COM parameters (baud rate, data bits, parity, stop bits), assign serial commands to the read switch, and apply basic data parsing so only the measurement you need is transmitted—helping streamline automation, improve traceability, and reduce manual data entry.

Setup Mode

Putting the RS-232 Mobile Module is setup mode is required to access the configuration menus. To place an RS-232 Module in setup mode and initiate a pairing/action request, follow the sequence of button presses below.

Setup Mode:

  1. Hold gray Setup button
  2. Press orange Read button once
  3. Release gray Setup button

Red and Green LEDs will Blink 5x then flash rapidly = Setup Mode (~60 sec)

Pairing/Action Request:

  1. Press gray Setup Button once during Setup Mode (Double Green LED 1 sec)

Configuring the RS-232 Mobile Module in Xpress Setup

  1. Open MobileCollect Xpress Setup and Find the Base.
  2. Click “Setup MobileCollect” to open the MobileCollect Setup prompt. Follow the steps in “Setup Mode” above to connect the RS-232 Mobile Module to the Setup Program.
  3. When done successfully, the “RS-232 Mobile Module Setup Window will appear. Basic information about the RS-232 Mobile Module is shown in the upper portion of the window. The lower portion is where all the configuration items are shown.
  4. Module Label – A user configurable label (8 characters) that can be sent with measurement data. The default Module Label is the Module ID.
  5. RS-232 Comm Parameters – Select the appropriate Baud rate and parameters to match the gage/device.
  6. Command – Serial command to send to the serial device to request data. Refer to the device manual for this command.
  7. Read Mode – Program single/continuous read modes and TIR/Absolute Value modes. Refer to the Changing Read Mode feature guide for more info.
  8. Parsing – The measurement packet received by the Mobile Module can be parsed to locate the first numeric field. If a numeric field is found, only the numeric field is sent to the Base. A numeric field must be at least 3 characters in length. The first character can be a blank. A decimal point is required in the field if this option is checked. The combination of the two is useful to look only for the precision number that usually represents the measurement from the gage and disregard numbers representing counts or the time and date.
  9. When changes are completed, ensure the RS-232 Mobile Module is in Setup Mode and press the “Update Module” Button to send parameters to the RS-232 Mobile Module.
  10. If the RS-232 Mobile Module is not paired to the base, use either global or individual channel pairing. Refer to the Mobile Module – Pairing with Xpress Setup feature guide for more info.

Conclusion

Configuring the RS-232 Mobile Module with MobileCollect Xpress Setup is a straightforward way to bring reliable, serial-output devices into a modern wireless data-collection workflow. Once you’ve set the correct communication parameters, verified clean data output, and confirmed the readings land properly in your host software, you’re ready to streamline collection, reduce manual entry, and improve traceability on the shop floor.
