More Than a Simple Switch

MicroRidge has built configurable read switch ports into its gage data collection hardware for over 30 years. What looks like a simple switch is actually a configurable trigger point in your data collection workflow — each press executes a function you define based on your measurement process requirements.

Send a serial command to the host, initiate a single or continuous read on a Digital Remote, trigger a TIR measurement sequence, poll all Command Mobile Modules simultaneously, or transition your entire Command Mobile Module wireless network between Active and Standby — all from a single button press at the measurement station.

MobileCollect Wireless — Read Switch Functions

The foot switch connects to the read switch port on the Full-Size MobileCollect Bases: the Wedge Base EVO and RS-232 Base EVO. Trigger functions are configured via MobileCollect Extended Setup — the Windows-based configuration utility for MobileCollect Bases, Remotes, and Mobile Modules.

Each switch press executes one of 14 configurable functions, targeting the Command Mobile Module, Digital Remote, or RS-232 Remote.

Host Communication - Switch Connected to the Base

  • Send Serial Command to Host — Transmit a user-defined serial command to the host computer (e.g., carriage return, tab, or custom string)

Digital Remote

Switch Connected to the Base

  • Read Digital Remote — Initiate a read on a specified Digital Remote
  • Continuous Read — Press to start, press to stop on a specified Digital Remote
  • TIR Read — Press to start, press to stop on a specified Digital Remote
  • Read All Digital Remotes — Trigger a read across all Digital Remotes; user can configure number of readings

Switch Connected to the Digital Remote

  • Single read — Press to trigger one reading from the connected gage
  • Continuous read (press and hold) — Press to start continuous acquisition; release to stop
  • Continuous read (press to start / press to stop) — First press starts continuous acquisition; second press stops it
  • TIR mode — Pairs with either continuous read option above to capture Total Indicator Reading
  • Set number of readings — Configure a defined reading count for either continuous read mode above

RS-232 Remote

Switch Connected to the Base

  • Send Command to RS-232 Remote — Transmit a user-defined command to a specified RS-232 Remote which passes that command to the RS-232 device such a read or print command.

Switch Connected to the RS-232 Remote

  • Accept reading on switch press — For RS-232 devices that output continuously, the switch gates data acceptance — a reading is only captured when the switch is pressed
  • Set handshake line low — Assert the handshake line low for a configurable duration (50–1,000 ms) to trigger a data send on devices that use handshake signaling
  • Send a serial command to the RS-232 device — Transmit a user-defined command directly to the connected RS-232 device

All three RS-232 Remote switch functions support auto-repeat: the command can be configured to repeat at a user-defined interval (250ms–60 sec) while the switch is held.

Command Mobile Module

Reads - Switch Connected to the Base

  • Read All Command Mobile Modules — Initiate a read across all Command Mobile Modules; use can configure number of readings
  • Read Channel 1 – Command Mobile Module — Read Channel 1 only; user can configure number of readings
  • Read Channel 2 – Command Mobile Module — Read Channel 2 only; user can configure number of readings
  • Read Channel 3 – Command Mobile Module — Read Channel 3 only; user can configure number of readings
  • Read Channel 4 – Command Mobile Module — Read Channel 4 only; use can configure number of readings

Power State Control - Switch Connected to the Base

  • Set All Command Mobile Modules to Active — Transition all Command Mobile Modules from standby to active state
  • Set All Command Mobile Modules to Standby — Transition all Command Mobile Modules to low-power standby state
  • Turn Off All Command Mobile Modules — Places all Command Mobile Modules into a dormant state where they stop listening for commands from the Base. Units are not fully powered down — pressing the read button on a module will still trigger a gage reading and transmit the result to the Base. Modules must be manually woken via a button press to resume receiving Base commands.

Configuration note: Read switch trigger functions on the MobileCollect system are configured exclusively via MobileCollect Extended Setup.

GageWay Wired Interfaces — Read Switch Functions

Available functions depend on the GageWay model — from a single-trigger read on the GageWay SM (also available with RS-232 output) and GageWay KW single-gage interfaces to a fully configurable multi-channel read sequence engine on the GageWay Pro2, Pro4, and Pro8.

GageWay SM — Single Gage Interface

  • Initiate a gage reading — Press to trigger a single reading from the connected gage

GageWay KW — Single Gage Interface (Keyboard Wedge Output)

  • Initiate a gage reading — Press to trigger a single reading from the connected gage
  • Continuous Read mode — Press and hold to begin continuous acquisition; release to stop

GageWay Pro — Multi-Channel Wired Interface

Each channel has its own read switch port with independently configurable trigger functions.

Single-Channel Reads

  • Single reading — current channel — Trigger one reading on the channel the switch is connected to
  • Continuous read — current channel (press and hold) — Hold to read continuously; release to stop
  • Continuous read — current channel (set count) — Execute a defined number of readings on the current channel
  • Continuous read — current channel (press to start / press to stop) — First press starts continuous acquisition; second press stops it

All-Channel Reads

  • Single read — all channels — Trigger one reading across all channels simultaneously
  • Continuous read — all channels (press and hold) — Hold to read all channels continuously; release to stop
  • Continuous read — all channels (set count) — Execute a defined number of readings across all channels
  • Continuous read — all channels (press to start / press to stop) — First press starts; second press stops

Custom Read Sequences

  • Read Channel 1 → Channel 5 → Channel 2 in a defined order
  • Read Channel 1 and Channel 2, pause and wait for a switch press, then read Channel 3 and Channel 4
  • TIR reading on Channel 1 followed by Channel 2
  • Configurable inter-reading delays (e.g., 500 ms wait between channels in a sequence)
  • Additional custom configurations available — The examples above are illustrative, not exhaustive. Contact sales@microridge.com to discuss your specific measurement sequence requirements.

Host Communication

  • Send serial command to host computer — Transmit a user-defined serial command to the host (e.g., carriage return, tab, or custom string)

WedgeLink Keyboard Wedges — Read Switch Functions

The foot switch is compatible with the WedgeLink AT — the only WedgeLink device with a read switch port. The switch can be programmed to one of three functions:

  • Send a serial command to the RS-232 device — Transmit a user-defined command out the RS-232 serial port to the connected device; optionally set the command to repeat at a user-configurable time interval
  • Send a command to the keyboard wedge USB port — Transmit a user-defined command via the keyboard wedge output; optionally set the command to repeat at a user-configurable time interval
  • Hold the DTR line low for 150 ms — Assert the DTR (Data Terminal Ready) line low for 150 milliseconds, triggering a data send on RS-232 gages that use DTR signaling to initiate output
