A DB9 serial extension cable is a straight-through 9-pin cable that extends the physical reach of an existing RS-232 serial connection. With a female connector on one end and a male connector on the other, it inserts inline between two existing DB9 connections, adding 6 feet of cable length with no modification to signal routing. All pins — including Tx, Rx, RTS, CTS, DTR, DSR, and Ground — pass directly to the same pin on the opposite end. For background on RS-232 signal lines, connector gender, and straight-through vs. null modem wiring, see our RS-232 Interface Guide.
This is not a null modem cable. No signal crossover occurs. If you need Tx and Rx crossed, see the DB9 Null Modem Cable or DB9 Adapter Kit.
RS-232 serial extension cables address situations where the native cable between an RS-232 gage interface and its host cannot reach the collection point:
RS-232 is rated for reliable transmission to approximately 50 feet (15 meters) at standard baud rates. For longer-range, high-noise industrial environments — or where cable runs are impractical — the MobileCollect Wireless system eliminates cable-length constraints entirely with a 140-foot RM2.4 wireless range.
Q: Is this the same as a null modem cable?
— No. This is a straight-through extension cable — all pins pass directly to the same pin on the other end with no signal crossover. For crossed Tx/Rx, see the DB9 Null Modem Cable or DB9 Adapter Kit.
Q: Can I chain multiple extension cables together?
— Physically yes, but RS-232 signal integrity degrades with total cable run length, and multiple connection points along the run introduce additional signal loss and potential failure points — neither is best practice. At standard baud rates, runs beyond approximately 50 feet may produce data errors. If you need a longer cable reach than a single 6-foot extension provides, contact us at sales@microridge.com before adding more connectors to the run. For longer-range data collection where cable runs are impractical, the MobileCollect Wireless system is the better solution.
Q: Which end plugs into my WedgeLink?
— The male end (DB9M) plugs into the female DB9 port on your WedgeLink or other gage interface. The female end (DB9F) accepts the male connector of the next cable or device in the chain.
