RS-232 DB9 ProAdapter

SKU PRO-A-DB9 Category Tag

The RS-232 DB9 ProAdapter creates custom pin configurations for any DB9 serial connection. An internal push-pin connector matrix lets you assign Tx, Rx, RTS, CTS, DTR, DSR, Power, and Ground to any of the 9 output pins — no soldering required. Designed for industrial environments where off-the-shelf null modem or gender changer solutions are insufficient: non-standard pinouts, discontinued manufacturer cables, or proprietary RS-232 wiring.

When Standard DB9 Cables and Adapters Don't Solve the Problem

Most RS-232 serial connection issues fall into two categories: physical connector mismatch (addressed by a gender changer) or Tx/Rx reversal (addressed by a null modem cable or adapter). If you’re not yet sure which category your issue falls into, our RS-232 Interface Guide covers DCE/DTE signal direction and wiring configurations in detail. But a third category exists that off-the-shelf accessories cannot fix: non-standard pinouts.

Non-standard DB9 pinouts appear frequently in:

  • Discontinued or legacy measurement equipment where manufacturer-specific cables are no longer available
  • Force gauges, measurement amplifiers, SPC scales, and other instruments with proprietary RS-232 wiring
  • Equipment where the device manual specifies a pin assignment that deviates from EIA-232 convention
  • Situations where the receiving device expects a custom handshaking configuration

The ProAdapter addresses this category by allowing full, flexible pin assignment across all 9 DB9 pins — without fabricating a custom cable or soldering.

How the ProAdapter Works

Inside the tamper-resistant enclosure, a push-pin connector matrix links the male and female DB9 sides of the adapter. You can route any RS-232 signal — Transmit (Tx), Receive (Rx), RTS, CTS, DTR, DSR, Power, and Ground — to any pin position on either the male or female connector. Once configured, the 4-screw enclosure locks the pin assignments in place, preventing accidental reconfiguration in industrial environments.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Does the ProAdapter require soldering?

— No. All pin assignments are made using the internal push-pin connector system. No tools or soldering are required to configure or reconfigure the adapter.

Q: What signals can I reassign with the ProAdapter?

— Transmit (Tx), Receive (Rx), RTS, CTS, DTR, DSR, Power, and Ground can all be assigned to any of the 9 DB9 pins on either the male or female side.

Q: When does a null modem cable not solve the problem, and why do I need the ProAdapter?

— A null modem cable crosses Tx/Rx and swaps handshaking signals following a fixed, standard pattern. If the connected device uses a non-standard pinout — for example, proprietary signal assignment or a wiring scheme that deviates from EIA-232 — a standard null modem cable will not produce a working connection. The ProAdapter allows you to configure the exact wiring the device requires.

Q: Can the ProAdapter be used with the GageWay Pro?

— It depends on which port you’re using. If you are connecting a single RS-232 device, you can use the RS-232 multifunction port on the back of the GageWay Pro directly — no Level Converter Cable required. If you need to use the front-panel gage channels with an RS-232 device, the Level Converter Cable (GW-LC) is required, and the ProAdapter then handles any non-standard pinout requirements on the connected device side.

Q: How do I verify my ProAdapter pinout configuration is working correctly?

— Once you’ve set the pin assignments and reconnected the device, use ComTestSerial and the steps in our Com Port Testing guide to open the COM port and confirm data is flowing correctly. If you’re seeing garbled characters, a comm parameter mismatch is the likely cause — not the pinout. If there’s no response at all, double-check the Tx/Rx pin assignments in the ProAdapter.
